Frequently-Asked Questions About the HPF Children’s Ministry:
What kinds of classes do you offer for children?
We offer classes for children from birth through 5th grade at our Sunday morning worship services.
Infants up to age 2: This class introduces our youngest children to the love of God through simple, repetitive learning activities about Jesus and Christian songs.
Preschool (ages 2 through 5): Kids have a Bible story, worship and music time, and lots of hands on learning activities to reinforce the lesson of the day
Kinder through 3rd Grade: Students spend about 20 minutes in an exciting time of worship before spending time in small groups where group leaders guide the groups through biblical teachings in a hands-on way.
4th and 5th Grades: Children in this age group attend the adult worship service with their parents before being dismissed to their class at the welcome time. Class includes Bible study with life application questions, teamed up with games or other activities.
Middle School/High School: For more information about these dynamic programs, please contact our youth pastor, Mike Horton, at (512) 731-0064 or mike@hpf.org.
What measures do you have in place to keep children safe?
Sign-In System: All students in 5th grade and below must be signed into class by a parent or another responsible adult. Simply stop by the Kidz Check-in Desk in our lobby, and someone will help you. After entering some basic information (your child’s name, age and parents’ names) into a computer, the system will print nametags for each child in your family. Nametags for children in 3rd grade and below will also include a security code. The parent will receive a tag with the matching codes for each child in the family. You cannot pick your child up from class without presenting the matching tag.
Volunteer Policies: We conduct criminal background checks for all adults working with children in our kids ministry. In addition, we have open classroom environments so teachers are never isolated or out of sight with kids. We also have leaders who regularly checks in on each classroom and helps resolve any problems that may arise so volunteers can focus on taking care of your children.
Parent Classroom Visits: Parents are welcome to drop in at any time during any our services. We want you to feel free to check up on us at any time. All classroom doors feature glass inserts so that you can look in and see how they are doing at any point during the service.
What other programs or activities do you offer for kids?
Rather than having a lot of activities for todays busy families, our ministry wants to encourage more family time together. On a weekly basis we want to ask families to focus on doing three things:
-
Come to church and kids classes
-
Participate in a growth group with other parents and kids
-
Spend time as a family in worship and Bible study (doing our take home activities for instance)
Special Events: Periodically throughout the year, the Children’s Ministry team hosts special activities for children and their families. Events such as the Fall Festival, the Promotion Sunday Picnic, Summer Camp and Children of the Word summer program are all designed for children.
Service Projects: We have service projects for kids and families, usually about one every month.
Children’s Library: We have a library full of Christian children’s books that are available for check-out at the end of each worship service. If you would like to check out a book, please visit the library with your child when you pick up our child.
Who are the leaders in children's ministry?
Our ministry is mainly run by parents and other volunteers, but we do have two staff people to help lead the ministries. Andy Adkins is our Children's Pastor and Susan Minne is our part-time Kids Ministry Admin Assistant.
What role do parents play in children’s ministry?
As a parent, we believe you have the most critical role in your kids spiritual development. We encourage all HighPoint parents to be involved in kids ministry as a volunteer, mainly because of the blessings you will receive. But mainly, we encourage you to ‘live the lessons’ of faith in your family every day at home. We specifically ask you to take time each week to do the activities we send home with your kids.
How can I help with children’s ministry?
HighPoint is a loving, giving, serving church! We encourage all of our members to use their gifts to bless others and to advance the kingdom of God. Whether you are with your kids group, or another group, your child gets to see your faith and love in action.
We do have a selective process to make sure we have the best people in place for kids ministry. It includes an application, background check, and interview to make sure we find the best place for you to serve. And we also train teachers and let them visit classes before starting to teach. Let Andy know if you want to find out more, and he will get you started on the process.
